What is the PGA US Open?

The United States Open Championship, known simply as the US Open, is an open national golf championship held annually in the United States. It’s one of the four men’s major golf championships and is on the official schedule of the PGA Tour and the European Tour.

The tournament features 72 holes of stroke play, played over 4 rounds on an 18-hole golf course. It’s organised by the United States Gold Association (USGA) and is held on a different course each year, with a prize fund worth $21.5 million.

What are The Grand Slam Tournaments/PGA Major Championships

The four men’s major championships in professional golf are:

  • The Masters

  • The PGA Championship

  • The US Open

  • The Open Championship

Winning all four tournaments, either in a calendar year or over the course of a career, is known as the Grand Slam.

History of the PGA US Open

In October 1895, the very first US Open was played at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. It was played over 36 holes in a single day, and was won by a 21-year-old Englishman. Many of the first tournaments were won by experienced British players, but in 1911, the first US-born player won, and soon US players began to win regularly while the US Open became one of the major golf championships.

Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus all hold the record for the most US Open championships, with 4 each. Willian Anderson holds the record for the most consecutive wins, having won 3 times between 1903 and 1905.

Format & Schedule of the PGA US Open

The US Open is open to any professional golfer or amateur player with a USGA Handicap Index of 0.4 or below. 156 players enter the tournament, either through qualifying or by automatic qualification due to their world ranking or previous success in the majors.

Golfers compete over 72 holes of stroke play, with 4 rounds on an 18-hole course. The course is designed to be as challenging as possible, making scoring difficult and prioritising accurate drives. After the first 2 rounds, players in the top 60 places advance to the final 2 rounds. If after 72 holes, there’s a tie for first place, a two-hole aggregate playoff is held, which is followed by sudden-death if the scores remain level.

When is the PGA US Open?

The 2026 US Open tournament will take place between 28 and 21 June and will be held at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.
