What is Golf

Golf History

Golf - as we know and love it today - has its roots in Scotland. The title of “The Home of Golf” is given to St Andrews, a golf course located on Scotland’s east coast, and the sport in the quaint Scottish town can be traced back to 1552. Golfers in St Andrews adapted and progressed the game from rules obtained from “the gentlemen of Leith”, who had established their own members' club in 1744. Subsequently, the world’s first official golf course was constructed at St Andrews in 1764, and King William IV honoured the club with the title “Royal and Ancient,” which is still known today.

In the early days of golf in Scotland, players used hand-crafted wooden clubs and balls made of feathers wrapped in a stitched horse hide. Golf soon crossed the border from Scotland to England, and the first course outside Scotland was Royal Blackheath on the outskirts of London. As the British Empire expanded, colonialists took golf with them.

The first golf course outside of the British Isles was established in Bangalore, India, with others quickly following in Ireland, Canada, South Africa, the United States, and Hong Kong. The pioneers of golf in Britain were the likes of Tom Morris and Willie Park, two men synonymous with the progression and development of the game and its associated equipment. However, the establishment of the United States Golf Association in 1894 brought about a mass interest in golf, and people throughout the United States became interested in the game for the first time.

Today, the American-based PGA Tour is widely seen as the pinnacle of the sport, with most of the world’s best players competing on the Tour each week. However, the emergence of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Tour has provided professionals with an alternative tour with big purses.

Golf Rules

Fundamentally, golf is an individual sport in which players compete against other players in the field. It’s unique in that the player with the lowest - not the highest - score at the end of a round wins.

Golf is played on a course with 18 holes. Each hole is given a “par,” indicating how many shots a player should attempt to take to score well. For instance, on a par 4, players should try to get the ball into the hole in four shots or fewer. The total par of the course is added up and given as a total number - usually in the region of 70-75. Players seek to shoot scores that are “under” par for their round, and the winning golfer is the player with the lowest score at the end of the round.

Most golf tournaments follow this method - known as stroke play - and consist of 3-4 rounds, meaning that a player’s total score over the 3-4 rounds will be added up. Ultimately, the winner will have the lowest score over the 3-4 rounds.

Some golf tournaments, notably the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, follow a match-play format, in which players seek to beat their competitors on each individual hole, as opposed to stroke play, where every shot matters. Some tournaments also use team formats such as Foursomes, where two-person teams play one ball and alternate hits on each hole, and Four-ball, where two-person teams each play their own ball, and the best score for each hole is counted.

Professional Golf Format

The professional golf season runs year-round, with multiple Tours available that hold events all over the world. The PGA Tour is the most famous of these, starting in January and running to November. The early season sees the first warm weather events, with the Players Championship held in March, while peak season takes place between April and July, with the 4 Majors taking place during these months. At the end of the PGA Tour, top-ranked players enter the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Other tours include the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), PGA Tour Champions (seniors) and DP World Tour (European Tour), Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and LIV Golf.

Golfers choose their schedule but must qualify for tournaments either based on past performances or qualifying rounds. Most golfers participate in between 20 and 30 events per year. They earn points based on their performances at tournaments that season. Signature events are smaller field tournaments that offer greater points.

2025 Season Recap

The 2025 season was a big year for Rory McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam as he won the Masters. He cemented his place in history, becoming just the 6th player to ever complete a career Grand Slam. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler dominated the PGA Championship and the Open, winning both, while also achieving victory at the Memorial Tournament signature event and the BMW Championship FedEx Playoff. J.J. Spaun won the US Open, the first major championship win of his career.

Europe were successful at the 2025 Ryder Cup in Bethpage, New York, at a tournament that was marked by poor behaviour from the crowd. The European team became the first away team to win the event since 2012.
