What is the US Masters?
The Masters is one of the 4 major championships in men’s professional golf and the first major golf tournament of the year. While the other majors take place at different locations every year, the US Masters is always held at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, United States.
The tournament is renowned for its rich history and traditions, including the famous green jacket awarded to the winner.
Rather than an open format, the Masters is by invitation only. To receive an invitation, golfers have to meet strict criteria, such as winning a major championship in the last 5 years or being ranked in the top 50 of the Official World Golf ranking.
History of the US Masters
The tournament began as the Augusta National Invitation Tournament in 1934, a year after the Augusta National Golf Club was opened. The inaugural event was won by Horton Smith, who claimed the first prize of $1,500. In 2025, the Masters offered a total of $21 million in prize money, with the winner receiving $4.2 million.
Excluding 1943 to 1945, the Masters has been held every year, with top players from all over the world in attendance.
The green jacket has been formally awarded to winning golfers since 1949. Winners keep their jacket for one year, after which it’s returned to the club to be worn whenever they play at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Winners also have their names engraved on the silver Masters trophy, while the runner-up has received a silver medal since 1951. A year later, the Champions’ Dinner was first held to mark the beginning of the Masters. This event now takes place on the Tuesday evening before Thursday’s first round and is attended by past champions of the tournament.
In 1963, the Masters began another time-honoured tradition, the honorary opening tee shot. This tradition is upheld by legendary players, many of whom are previous winners of the tournament.
Format & Schedule of the US Masters
The US Masters is a stroke-play tournament, consisting of 4 rounds, each of 18 holes. For the first 2 rounds, competitors play in groups of 3. After 36 holes have been played, a cut-off score is calculated to reduce the size of the field for the weekend rounds.
Over the weekend, an additional 36 holes are played. If the 4th round fails to decide a winner, all tied golfers enter a sudden-death playoff.

The US Masters takes place every year, starting in the first full week of April.
