What is the PGA Championship?
The PGA Championship is one of the four major golf championships and sees the best golfers in the world competing for a prize pool worth millions of dollars. It’s held every year in the United States of America, and is organised by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America.
The venue for the PGA Championship changes regularly, generally at one of a small group of well-established elite golf clubs.
PGA Champions are automatically invited to play in the other 3 majors and the Players Championship for the next 5 years while also being eligible to take part in the PGA Championship for life. Unlike the other major golf championships, the PGA Championship is only open to professional players. Qualification is open to former PGA Champions, the winners of any of the last 5 major championships, as well as the top 3 ranked players and the top 15 scorers in the last PGA Championship.

Winning all four tournaments, either in a calendar year or over the course of a career, is known as the Grand Slam.
History of the PGA Championship
In 1894, the first official golf organisation was founded in the United States, leading to the creation of official national championships for amateur golfers. As the sport continued to grow in popularity, it professionalised, and led to the formation of the modern game as we know it.
The first PGA Championship was held in October 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York, organised by the newly created Professional Golfers Association of America. Jim Barnes won the first tournament, receiving $500 in prize money and a diamond-studded gold medal, known as the Wanamaker Trophy.
Originally, the PGA Championship was a match-play event held after the summer, but the months in which it was held varied. Starting from 1958, the tournament was changed to stroke play, reducing the number of holes played and making it more suitable for television broadcast.
During the 1960s, the PGA Championship was played a week after the Open, making it difficult for golfers to compete in both. Beginning in 2019, the PGA Championship has been moved to May, the week before Memorial Day.
Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus hold the record for the most PGA Championship wins, having both won the competition 5 times.
Format & Schedule of the PGA Championship
The PGA Championship is a 72-hole individual stroke play tournament featuring 4 rounds of play. A field of 156 professional players takes part, and each round sees golfers playing an 18-hole course. After the first 2 rounds, totalling 36 holes, players in the top 70 places make the cut for the 3rd and 4th rounds.
If players are tied in first place after 72 holes, a 3-hole aggregate score playoff is played. This is repeated until there’s a winner.
When is the PGA Championship?
The PGA Championship is held in May each year, with the 2026 PGA Championship scheduled for 14-17 May at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Check recent form - When choosing your PGA Championship bets, it’s important to look at the recent form of each player coming into the tournament. The PGA Championship occurs 2 months after the Masters, which will give an indicator of the form of top players.
Pay attention to course history - The PGA Championship is held at a different course each year, but lots of players may already have history on the course. Check their performance at the Aronimink Golf Club, paying close attention to other tournaments they’ve won there.
Consider the weather and course conditions - While May is typically the start of summer, poor weather can still be a factor over the course of the tournament.
