Sergio Agüero: August 2025 Football Insights & Predictions
Manchester City
If you could bring back one player that you used to play with to help Man City this season, who would it be?
I’ve been lucky to have shared the field with many amazing players. Every one of them brought something unique, and then there’s our personal chemistry working together to account for. I always said that my best partnerships were with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, with many accomplishments to back that statement. But others were great to play with too.
My point is that teams are the sum of these types of partnerships being built upon on the field. That cannot be bottled in a can, so there’s not much point of naming someone in particular. That being said, having a player like Kevin or David is essential to success. City has Rodri; sure, he plays a different position but he’s got quality to spare and will have a very impactful return. Phil Foden is sure to pick back up the pace and become a key piece of the puzzle. And if you are a striker, assists are the most wanted currency, Cherki seems like he’ll be able to provide that type of resource for the offensive line.
Do you see yourself going into coaching one day? If so, where would you like to start? Also, is there a dream club that you would love to manage?
I’ve said so before, I just don’t see myself coaching. There’s quite a lot of preparation that’s necessary, and it’s a very demanding job. Maybe, sometime in the future, I could assist in another function, like management. Remains to be seen, but so far, I’m happy with my current projects. And there’s plenty of them! I’m fired up to run them, it’s a lot of work and very gratifying.
Looking at the current Man City squad, who would you most want to play alongside?
With the ones I’ve played in the past! Rodri, Foden I’ve namedropped already, and I’d add Bernardo and Gundo. Of the ones I’ve never played with, Haaland is one.
Which young player do you think will be next to break through and show how good they are?
There’s a good bunch of players that have been looking to get more play time and have risen up to the occasion when that’s happened. Nico O'Reilly is one. Oscar Bobb should be back by now from the injury that put an end to a great last season. He has been showing a lot of promise and I think Oscar could have an important contribution to the team.
Premier League Predictions
It’s hard enough to make good premier league predictions and harder so when we talk about such a tightly contested league like the PL, which is the most competitive national league in the world.
To start off, in spite of Liverpool's comfortable lead last season, I think this one will be much closer. They are defending champs though, and while their offensive line had a lot of changes, they made good trades so they’re likely to be contenders. I’m sure City will rally to fight for the top positions, specially with Pep at the helm.
Arteta's Arsenal has been shaping up nicely and they’ve been raring for a title for the last few years. Chelsea took the Club World Cup very convincingly, they’ve got a young team, and Maresca has been able to build up a sizable roster of solid players to havea deep bench.
Jury is still out on whether United will be able to resurface with their new forwards; and whether Tottenham’s new manager will be able to find the formula to take them to the top.
I’d be remiss not to mention Newcastle, they had a very respectable showing last season and has kept that potential intact.
As usual, it’s not breaking news if I say those are the big candidates. And that I hope that City wins it. Either way, I think point margins will be much tighter this go-around. But if I have to guess:
Who will win the Premier League?
Manchester City
Who will come in the top four?
Man City Liverpool Arsenal Chelsea (not in order)
Who will finish in the top seven?
Same as top 4 + Manchester United and Newcastle
Who will win the Golden Boot and the Playmaker award?
I’d like Haaland to win awards because that means he’s sure to have a scored a lot for City. Salah's name should be brought up when we talk Golden Boot, same with Isaak. And players arriving to the Premier League with a massive tally like Gyokeres at Arsenal have a chance to shake things up.
Who will win PFA Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year and PFA Manager of the Year?
I’d like Foden to win Player of the Year again.I’ve mentioned Phil but there’s also Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer or Declan Rice. They are sure to stand out and have a shot at the accolade.
Who will win the Ballon d’Or?
I was glad to see Lautaro among the top 30 candidates once more! And Mac Allister's inclusion too. Nevertheless, I think Champions League performance will be the deciding factor, and more so the winning team’s. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dembele take it home. He’s also played a wonderful season for the PSG. Lamine Yamal ought to be in the running too, as well as Salah, who was a big part of Liverpool's PL campaign while also being the top scorer.

Man City have signed James Trafford, will he be Man City’s number one this season?
My understanding is that any player, regardless of their position or history, needs to be able to earn their spot in the team game in, game out. Ederson has been doing a fantastic job in the position so it’s likely going to be a competitive spot. That can certainly be very healthy to a team, in the right measure.
Galatasaray are heavily linked with signing Ederson, would you like to see him keep playing in the biggest leagues?
As far as I know, Ederson remains part of City. I haven’t heard as much. Lots of clubs are interested in James McAtee, is there a danger he could be another Cole Palmer and explode at another club? No two situations are identical. It’s hard to compare. Why shouldn’t there be interest in a young, talented player who has done a great job in the youth squad of the national team to boot? Haven’t heard of a trade myself but he is still wearing City’s colours to date.
Real Madrid are apparently interested in signing Rodri for £100m, as a former Man City and Atletico Madrid player yourself, do you see this as very unlikely?
Rumours are common currency, and one ought to avoid taking too much stock in them. I wouldn’t cash that one in either – Rodri is one of City’s stars and a vital part of the squad. I would call it improbable at least.
The Alexander Isak transfer saga has dominated the news in recent weeks, if he goes to Liverpool, do they have an unstoppable attack with Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike?
Isak's potential arrival could make them que desestime offensively. On the one hand, Liverpool just lost two major forwards: Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz. On the other, Wirtz coming from the Bundesliga should add some playmaking capability. And Ekitike has shown a knack for goalscoring on his past tenure at Eintracht, so he should be another factor too.
Is the loss of Luis Diaz big? How good will he be at Bayern under Vincent Kompany?
Yes, as I mentioned, I’d say it’s a big loss but there’ll be suitable reinforcements. Diaz has been one of the top PL players and Kompany is sure to set him up for success in the German scene. Luis has got skill, speed, and lethality. Bayern should certainly profit from his signing.
Man United and Newcastle are fighting for Benjamin Sesko, who would you rather join if you were Sesko?
Hard for me to get in his shoes. It’s moot though since he’s signed with ManU from what I’ve read.
Chelsea have signed Jorrel Hato from Ajax, is their team very competitive now with the strength in the depth?
Chelsea has played this transfer season very smart. With Colwill being out on an unfortunate injury, Hato helps upgrade the defensive line for sure.
Barcelona
Where will Marcus Rashford play for Barcelona? Will he rotate with Lewandowski? It will be hard to bench Raphinha. Could we see Rashford back to his best at Barcelona?
Teams that aim to win every major tournament they play, they need multiple variants for each configuration. And Barcelona is one such team. I think Rashford will go a long way, he was great for Aston Villa last season. He’s a quality player and should certainly rack up playtime over the course of multiple competitions.

Jude Bellingham has just had shoulder surgery, do you think we’ll see him back to his best this season?
No doubt. Bellingham is a cracking player, everyone could see that during his debut season for Madrid. Injuries have weighed on him, I hope this surgery has removed any remaining discomfort he had left. If that’s the case, I believe he’ll be back at top form.
Lionel Messi is still assisting and scoring world class goals in the MLS. If he wins the World Cup in 2026, could we see him compete for his ninth Ballon d’Or?
Expect also to keep assisting and scoring, that’s his lifeblood. Inter Miami has been evolving as a team, and now DePaul's arrival should only help to consolidate that. Leo’s present is much more interesting to me than what-ifs for the future. I’m much more impressed by the drive and tireless fighting spirit that he constantly displays. As for what’s next, you know my line. He’s earned the right to choose whatever path he wants to take.
Cristiano Ronaldo has now brought Joao Felix to Al-Nassr, will we see this team eventually force themselves into the Champions League?
It’s all about putting up a good game. This is football, so everything else around that could change and anything can happen. We’ll have to wait and see.
Could you see a world where Saudi Arabian teams are competing in the Champions League?
I believe the Champions League has its own identity. The Club World Cup was a great experience, and we had Saudi Arabia's Al Hillal playing. I think that was a natural match to see intercontinental face offs.
