Premier League
What did you think of the Man City vs Everton game?
Just like every Premier League game, it won’t be easy. Everton have had a brilliant start and they are riding high after that last minute coup on Crystal Palace. I trust that City will play a good game, they’ve been on an upward trajectory, and they are stronger every day.
Erling Haaland is already halfway to your Premier League goal tally. Will he beat Alan Shearer’s record if he stays for the rest of his contract?
I’ve been known to praise Erling’s ability to score. The numbers don’t lie, and he’s had a great start to the season. Of course if he keeps it up, he’ll break every record out there. That should be good for City, more goals likely mean that they are winning big things. That’s what matters in the end.
Has Erling Haaland missed his opportunity to win the Ballon d’Or with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe now maybe ahead of him?
Why should that be the case? The season is just getting started and he’s on the running. The consistency we see from him and the other players will dictate what happens, but the result of the Champions League is going to be crucial for the Ballon d’Or too.
Seeing how positively Kevin De Bruyne has started at Napoli, do you think Man City let him go too early?
Some cycles start and end, and there’s little reason to speculate a lot about it. What matters is that Kevin was a pillar of City and a decisive factor for their success for years. He’ll always have a major place in the club’s history, I think the fans proved as much when he played at Etihad with Napoli. It was a touching moment of recognition for a wonderful player who gave so much to the team.
With Jack Grealish playing so well for Everton, can you see him returning to Man City next season?
That type of forward looking statement would be premature to make. Jack has found his football again, proven by his latest tally of assists and that massive goal on Palace that allowed Everton to take home the W.
What’s your score prediction for the Man City vs Aston Villa game?
Another rough game ahead. Villa did not kick off with their full potential but they’ve turned it around. They’re back on the marquee. I hope City wins, but it won’t be easy.
Reaction to any big PL results
It’s still the first few rounds, so it’s early to make predictions. Liverpool, for one, looked strong on the onset of the season with many wins, some of them close to the last whistle. But then their results began to decline. So that’s why we’ll have to wait to see how each game turns out. Arsenal keeps being the team to beat, just like they’ve been for the past few seasons. City is on the rise and once more close to the top. As I usually say, the team that is the most consistent will take the trophy. That’s what always happens. The last few years have given us many cases of teams holding on to the pole position for many matchdays and then losing steam on the last leg.
What do you make of Manchester United’s start to the season? Is it a matter of time before they sack Ruben Amorim?
I think their last win gives him some breathing space. I understand that there’s been a lot of talk about his continuity in the team, but only United leadership’s know the answer for sure.
You briefly played under Barcelona legend Xavi. Could he be the man to succeed Amorim if Man Utd do decide to change coach?
That’s beyond my oracular powers to answer. I wouldn’t make that type of judgement while there’s an active manager on the team already, it wouldn’t be ethical. I do know for a fact that Xavi is a fantastic coach, he could lead any major team. But an opinion on this matter would be out of turn.
Should Liverpool be concerned by Mo Salah’s slow start to the season? Is it a sign that he is beginning to slow down?
It’s not about a single player, Liverpool has had a big reshuffle in their offensive line. Lucho Diaz is gone, and new players are still adapting. There’s bound to be some growing pains. Eventually, things will fall into place, and they’ll regain their attacking prowess and Salah’s, for that matter.
Viktor Gyokeres has had a mixed start to life in the Premier League. What have you made of Arsenal’s new striker?
His last season was exceptional, but the Premier League requires a long adaptation process. He’s a potent striker, a well defined 9 with a knack for goals. Arsenal will provide Viktor plenty of opportunities to score with their offensive style. He just needs to continue with this process.
Nick Woltemade has impressed leading the line for Newcastle. Is it too soon to say he has already filled the gap left by Alexander Isak?
He may have achieved it, or so it seems so far. Nick is scoring, everyone on his team looks for him when building an attack. Full season is still a question mark, but he’s started with the right foot.
Barcelona
What have you made of Marcus Rashford’s start to life in Barcelona? Do you think he will keep his place when Raphinha returns from injury?
Marcus has become an integral part of the team, assisting and scoring both. This is doubly admirable considering he just began playing in a new league. As for the matter of who stays on the main squad… that’ll be up to the coach to decide. But a team like Barca needs to have many options to aim for multiple titles in a single season, so I don’t think there’s a single spot to fight for.
Do you think Barcelona will choose to buy him after this loan? The option is only £26 million.
Anything can happen, and even more so if he keeps playing this way.
Who do you see as Barcelona’s biggest rivals for the Champions League this season?
With the new format, they are the top contender. We’ll have to see what happens in this initial phase, what kind of matchups they have. But first things first teams need to get as many points as possible, whoever they have to face. There might be a few surprises, but the usual contenders will be there for sure: Real Madrid, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool, and City…
How do you see Barcelona vs Real Madrid going this weekend?
Surely a sight of a game, as any derby is wont to be. Both teams have amazing players on their rosters, both fighting for first place. Should be worth watching for sure.
Champions League
Of all the away grounds you played at in the Champions League, which had the best atmosphere?
When facing major teams, especially for the ECL, every stadium’s atmosphere feels special. Of course, each one has its own special feel. Camp Nou, Bernabeu, PSG’s… but as long as it is a Champions League game, I could feel it too even when playing against other English teams.
Which of your Champions League goals is your favourite?
I was lucky enough to play many games in the Champions League and to score many goals. I always remember the hat trick on Pep’s Bayern. It was a high profile victory, and the hat trick mattered a lot.
Who was the toughest defender you faced in the Champions League?
Plenty to choose from! One of the most memorable is Sergio Ramos, always a dogged marker.
Who do you think is a ‘dark horse’ in this year’s competition?
There’ll always be fair amount of surprises but I believe this one will likely go to the usual suspects: Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Liverpool, Bayern, City… but this time, I’d keep Arsenal and Atletico de Madrid in mind. Arsenal had a great last season, and a solid team. And Atleti has kept up a high level.
What do you think of the new Champions League format? Did you prefer the old group stage with four teams?
I think last season gave us a preview. After this one, we should be able to make a fair assessment of the overall quality of the format.
Aregentina
Will you be telling Lionel Messi to play in next summer’s World Cup or do you think the Qatar triumph was the perfect farewell to the competition?
I think everyone wants Leo to play forever, don’t we all? But it’ll be up to him to make that choice, whenever he does make it.
How do you compare this Argentina team with the one that lifted the trophy three years ago?
I think the foundations remain the same. That’s very important, even if some of the key players have moved on like Di Maria. But one of Scaloni’s great achievements, in my mind, is that he’s managed to guide a natural renewal process for the roster. He’s provided chances for kids with a lot of talent to shine, and he’s been able to pace their growth. Mastantuono or Nico Paz come to mind. I believe that allows the team to keep up a good pace.
Who is your Argentinian ‘one to watch’ at the World Cup?
The whole team really. If there’s something that characterizes Argentina is their teamwork. Obviously, if Leo is there, that’s the main attraction. Outside of him, Argentina has many cracking players that always rise to the occasion: Enzo Fernandez, Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez… Each of them provides a unique contribution, and a ton of quality to boot. But if there’s one thing to highlight, that’d be the teamwork.
Julian Alvarez continues to deliver for Atletico Madrid, could he be a solution for Man United’s lack of goals?
What Julian has achieved is amazing. A player that can pace across the whole field proves an enormous level of sacrifice and talent. The team should enjoy having him on their side and so should the fans! I wouldn’t speculate on future moves, I think this is the time to enjoy his achievements for Atletico.
Football News
What have you made of Harry Kane’s remarkable start to the league with Bayern Munich, and do you see him as the best striker in the world?
One of the best, no doubt. Harry has been up there year after year, so his current performance at Bayern should be no surprise. He’d been one of the linchpins of the Premier League for years. Now, with Kompany by his side, it should come as no surprise that he’s still a lethal striker and a key component of Bayern’s team.
Is Vincent Kompany proving everyone wrong and showing he deserves to be managing at an elite level?
He’s shown his value as a great coach. Bayern is playing great, making justice to their history as a team. You can tell that on the field, the team seems confident on their game, and they are well respected by rivals.
How would you handle the situation if you were Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak had been signed by the club just months after you arrived?
That’s just fair competition. Quite a healthy thing for a team to have many players vying for the same spot, it only makes sense for major clubs to have two possible options for the same position. The player with the best form will have their place on the main squad.
