What is the Bundesliga?

The Bundesliga is the premier German football championship, with leading teams from across the country competing each year for the Meisterschale. Dominated in recent times by Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga hosts many of the best soccer players in Europe, with fast-paced and scintillating soccer on show each week.

Learn how to bet on German teams that compete in Germany’s Bundesliga here and discover the different soccer betting markets you can place at Stake Sportsbook.

History of the Bundesliga

The Bundesliga was founded in August 1963 and followed some turbulent times in Germany. Before it was founded, German football was entirely amateur or semi-professional, and many of the best German players would move to play abroad. However, national championships were still played every year, with the first edition in 1903.

When the Bundesliga was first formed, the league was originally just for West German teams. The DS-Oberliga was established for teams in the east of the country. Hansa Rostock and Dynamo Dresden became the first two East German teams to join the Bundesliga following reunification.

German giants Bayern Munich are the most successful team in Bundesliga history, with 34 titles to their name. Between 2012-13 and 2022-23, they won the Bundesliga eleven years in a row. However, their winning streak was broken by Bayer Leverkusen, who won their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season.

13 teams have been crowned Bundesliga champions since the league’s inception. Alongside Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, VFB Stuttgart, FC Köln, and Kaiserslautern have all won the trophy at least twice.

Format & Schedule of the 2025-26 Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is a round-robin soccer league where each team plays a total of 34 matches. Half of these are at home, and the other half are away, with two matches against each opponent.

Teams earn three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. These points are used to rank teams in the table, with goal difference and goals scored used if point totals are tied.

At the end of the season, the team at the top of the table will be crowned champions, while the bottom two are relegated to 2. Bundesliga. The 16th-placed team will enter a relegation play-off against the team that finishes third in 2. Bundesliga.

The top four-placed teams in the Bundesliga qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, while 5th place qualifies for the Europa League league phase and 6th place enters the Conference League playoff round.

Here are some key dates for this season’s Bundesliga:

  • Opening fixtures: 22 August 2025

  • Start of Winter break: 19 December 2025

  • End of Winter break: 9 January 2026

  • Final day of the season: 16 May 2026

  • Relegation play-offs: 21 or 22 and 25 or 26 May 2026

  • Moneyline– This is a straight-up bet on the team that you think will win a specific Bundesliga fixture.

  • 1x2 - A 1x2 soccer bet is a wager on the home win (1), draw (x), or away win (2).

  • To qualify - a bet on a team you think will qualify for the UEFA Champions League or any other continental competition.

  • Draw no bet – This is a wager on the result of the game, but your stake is returned if the game ends in a draw.

  • Asian total– Bet on the total number of goals, cards, or corners in a Bundesliga fixture. Bet on the over/under, with half and quarter totals possible.

  • Asian handicap – This is a bet on a Bundesliga match with a handicap applied to the favourite that they must overcome for your bet to be successful. The handicap can use full, half, or quarter goals.

  • Double chance – A wager that allows you to bet on two outcomes (home win and draw, for instance). If either of the outcomes you choose occurs, you win your bet.

  • 1st goal – A wager on the player or team you think will score the first goal in a Bundesliga fixture.

  • Correct score – A bet on what you think the final score will be in a Bundesliga match.

  • Both teams to score – This is a simple wager on a match in which you think both teams will find the back of the net.

  • Halftime/fulltime – A wager that allows you to bet on who you think will be winning at halftime and then at fulltime in a Bundesliga match.

  • Prop bets - You’ll also find player props and game props such as first goalscorer and whether a red card will be shown on Bundesliga games.

  • Outrights - This is a bet on an outcome of the season, such as which teams will qualify for Europe, which will be relegated, and which team will be crowned champions. You can also bet on the 2026 World Cup winners.

You can also opt for a Bundesliga same-game multi bet if you want to incorporate multiple selections on individual matches into the same slip. What’s more, you can extend your betting pool further by betting on the German third league, as well as amateur soccer in Germany.

Bundesliga Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies

Here are some handy tips that will help you as you make your Bundesliga 2023/24 selections:

  1. Research - Always do your research and consider a team’s current form and injuries before backing them. This is so important, as the Bundesliga is a super competitive league. Are any key players missing? Does one team have a superior head-to-head record against their rivals? Check the stats at Stake for detailed information.

  2. Form - Always pay attention to form when betting on soccer matches. This typically has a big impact on upcoming matches, as in-form teams perform better overall. It’s generally considered more important than the home advantage, as last season, home sides won 39% of games while away teams won 36% of the time.

  3. Betting on the over - The Bundesliga is home to some of Europe’s top attacking players. Last season, an average of 3.13 goals were scored per game, which would make the over 2.5 line a profitable bet in a lot of cases. In addition, 93% of games ended with at least 1 goal scored. Check the stats before you make your bet.

  4. Sports betting guides - If you’re new to soccer betting, refer to our ultimate sports betting guide for more tips that will help you make your selections.
