Major Fighters in UFC Fight Night: de Ridder vs Allen
Reinier de Ridder
Former 2-weight One Championship champion Reinier de Ridder has looked incredible since he first arrived in the UFC last year. He’s now won 5/5 UFC fights, including stoppage wins over Gerald Meerschaert, Kevin Holland and Bo Nickal. The last time he entered the cage, he won a split decision against former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. While he’s best known for his grappling, de Ridder has also shown much improved striking in the UFC, especially his knees to the body.
Brendan Allen
Allen looked like a certain title challenger until he lost recent fights to Nassourdine Imavov and Anthony Hernandez. Before that, he was on a 7-fight win streak, which included an impressive 5 wins by rear naked choke. His last fight came against Marvin Vettori in July, which he won and was awarded a Fight of the Night bonus. That meant he moved up 2 places in the rankings to 9th, and he stepped in to replace Anthony Hernandez for a chance to earn a future title shot.
Kevin Holland
Holland’s recent record is patchy, with 2 wins and 3 losses in his last 5 fights. Overall, in his career, he’s 28-14, with 15 wins and 11 losses in the UFC. This year, he’s already had 4 fights, with both of his wins earning him a bonus. While Holland isn’t particularly consistent, he’s known for his high finish rate. In the UFC, 40% of his wins have been by KO/TKO, and 33% have been by submission.
Mike Malott
Malott will have the support of the crowd for this fight, fighting out of Niagara Top Team in Canada. His career record is 12-2-1, with 5 wins and 1 loss in the UFC. His only loss in the UFC was against Neil Magny, in a fight that he was winning up until the 3rd round. Since then, he has 2 wins, including his most recent fight, which he finished by TKO in the 2nd round. 80% of his UFC wins have been stoppages.
Fight Card & Betting Odds
Main Event
De Ridder has impressed since arriving in the UFC just last year, already earning his way to title challenger status. However, he’ll need at least one more win before he earns a shot at Khamzat. Although his grappling and submission skills are his main weapons, he’s shown improvements in his striking, and that will definitely make him a problem for Allen, who is much more comfortable on the ground.
Allen is stepping in to replace Hernandez and taking on a tough opponent in de Ridder. As expected, he’s currently the UFC odds underdog for this fight, but a win would put him back into title contention. Allen will most likely look to take de Ridder down, but he’ll have to be wary of de Ridder’s submission skills.
Co-Main Event
Holland is coming into this fight off the back of a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Rodriguez, but before that, he had back-to-back wins and performance of the night bonuses. It’s hard to know which version of Holland will show up because sometimes he’s impressive, while in other fights he looks lost.
Malott is the home fighter at UFC Vancouver and also a significant betting favourite according to the latest MMA odds. He only has one loss in the UFC and is currently on a 2-fight win streak. Malott’s performances show he has the ability to beat Holland, but he gassed out against Magny and struggled. It will also be interesting to see how he handles the power of Holland.
