The League of Legends World Championship, also known simply as the LoL Worlds, is an annual competition between top League of Legends teams. Format & Structure
16 teams take part in the competition proper, with the final team decided by a play-in match taking place in Beijing at the Beijing JD Esports Center on 14 October. This is a best-of-5 series between the MSI 2025 winner and the LPL Regional Finals runner-up.
The two main stages of the LoL Worlds tournament are as follows:
15-25 October - Swiss Stage - In this stage, teams play 5 rounds of best-of-1 matches, although elimination and advancement matches are played to the best-of-3. Teams must win 3 games to progress to the knockout stage. Matches take place in Beijing.
28 October to 9 November - Knockout Stage - 8 teams progress from the Swiss stage, playing in a single-elimination bracket. Here, matches are played in a best-of-5 series, and the Fearless Draft is in effect, which means teams can’t reuse a champion from a previous game in a match. The quarterfinals and semifinals are played at the Shanghai Mercedes-Benz Arena, while the final will be held at the Chengdu Dong’an Lake Sports Park Gymnasium.

T1 - The 5-time winners of the Worlds are the top team heading into the competition. However, they have to get through the play-in stage in order to make the tournament this year. Faker, widely considered one of the best LoL players ever, is their top player.
Gen.G - After winning the Mid-Season Invitational, Gen.G automatically qualified for the Swiss stage. They’re a great team this year, having also won the Esports World Cup. Kiin was their top player at the World Cup, winning the MVP award. Last year, they finished 3rd/4th at the Worlds.
Bilibili Gaming - After they were defeated in the 2024 final, Bilibili will try once more to secure their first World Championship. They qualified for the tournament after winning the LPL 2025 Split 3, while their top player, Knight, became the most decorated LPL player with his 6th title.

The new Fearless Draft system, which prevents teams from picking the same champion over consecutive games, means that overall team composition and adaptability are more important than ever. This system was introduced for the First Stand Tournament this year and will be in effect for the knockout stage of the LoL Worlds.
