What is League of Legends?

League of Legends (LoL) is one of the biggest and most popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games. Aside from being fun to play, the top players utilise complex strategies and teamplay to find success, which makes it perfect for Esports.

LoL was developed by Riot Games and launched in 2009. The game was actually developed off the back of Warcraft III’s Defence of the Ancients map, but the game has changed a lot since its release, introducing new champions, abilities and maps for players to enjoy.

The premise of the game is simple: 2 teams of 5 players compete across a map to destroy the enemy team’s main base structure, known as the Nexus. Each player controls a champion, which all have unique abilities and gain experience through combat to increase their power. Players must work closely with their teammates to defeat enemy champions and destroy turrets to make their way through lanes and into the enemy base.

The fact that League of Legends was released as a free-to-play game helped fuel its incredible rise in popularity, and it quickly became one of the best-loved MOBA games of its time. By 2011, LoL had approximately 15 million online players.

The first-ever League of Legends World Championship was held in 2011 at DreamHack. By 2024, the Grand Final of the tournament had grown to attract 6.94 million peak viewers, a new Esports record.

Biggest League of Legends Tournaments to Bet on

There are lots of major League of Legends tournaments and events happening throughout the year. We’ve outlined some of the biggest events below, all of which you can bet on here at Stake:

LoL Championship Series (LCS)/LoL Championship of The Americas (LTA)

The LCS was the top level of professional League of Legends in the United States and Canada. The league began in 2013 and has run every year, with spring and summer splits. These conclude with a double-elimination tournament between the top teams. At the end of the season, the winner, runners-up and third-place team of the summer playoffs qualify for the LoL World Championship.

In 2025, the LCS merged with the Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLOL) and Liga Latinoamerica (LLA) to form the League of Legends Championship of the Americas (LTA). The LCS became the LTA North Conference.

LoL Pro League (LPL)

The LPL is the top level of professional League of Legends in China. The league began in 2013 and, since then, has held annual tournaments for Spring and Summer. For the regular season, all 17 teams compete in a single round robin group, with matches played to best-of-5. The top 10 teams advance to the playoffs, where matches are played to the best of 5 games. Spring split finalists represent China at the Mid-Season Invitational, while the sinner of the Summer split enters the World Championship along with the team with the most championship points and the winner and runners-up of the regional qualifier.

LoL EMEA Championship (LEC)

The LEC is the professional League of Legends league in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Previously, it had just included European teams, but was expanded to include teams from the Middle East and Africa in 2023. The season is divided into 3 splits: Winter, Spring and Summer. The winner of the Winter split qualifies for the First Stand tournament, while the top 2 teams of the Spring split enter the Mid-Season Invitational. At the end of the Summer split, the top 3 teams qualify for the League of Legends World Championship.

LoL Champions Korea (LCK)

In South Korea, the best professional teams compete in the LCK. This league features a Spring and Summer season every year. It was formed in 2012, originally known as League of Legends Champions, before it was restructured in 2014. The LCK is the most successful league in League of Legends, with teams from this competition winning the World Championship 9 times, including 5 consecutive titles between 2013 and 2017.

Mid-Season Invitational (MSI)

The MSI is an annual League of Legends tournament featuring the best teams from around the world. It takes place in the mid-point of the season and has been held since 2015. World Championship (LoL Worlds)

The biggest event on the professional League of Legends calendar is the LoL World Championship. This takes place annually between September and November and features 17 teams that compete for the Summoner’s Cup and millions of dollars in prize money. The event has broken records for Esports viewership and has been held since 2011.

League of Legends Betting Tips & Strategies

  1. Consider the match format and tournament trends - LoL can be decided by a single game or by a best-of-3 or 5 series. For best-of-1 matches, there’s a higher potential for upsets, while the stronger team will generally always have a better chance of winning in best-of-3 or 5 matches. You should also pay attention to the type of tournament, whether it’s LAN or online, and the region. Different trends, strategies and playstyles may be popular in different regions.

  2. Player matchups - While LoL is a team game, individual players can make a huge difference to matches, especially when they’re matched up against an opponent that feeds their strengths. Look at head-to-head histories and consider the individual lane matchups of the match.

  3. Meta and adaptability - Teams that are able to utilise a number of different champions and team comps are typically more successful. While some teams depend on meta picks, those that are able to adapt and respond better to changes will have a better chance of achieving victory.

  4. Follow our guides and predictions - We’ve created a lot of helpful guides to help you make successful bets. For example, our guide to MOBA betting and MOBA terminology guide. We also share tips and predictions for major tournaments, such as the LoL Worlds picks.
