The first season of the Bundesliga was the 1963-64 season, which saw 16 teams from across West Germany taking part, while East Germany had its own separate league at that time. Following reunification in 1990, the East German leagues were merged into the West German system. The Bundesliga was expanded to feature 18 teams from the 1992-93 season.

Teams in the Bundesliga play a total of 34 matches in the league across the season, with each club playing each opponent once at home and once away. A victory is worth 3 points, while draws are worth 1 and losses give zero points. These points are used to rank teams in the table, with the top team at the end of the season declared the champions.
The bottom 2 teams get relegated automatically to 2. Bundesliga, while the 16th-placed side plays in the relegation play-offs against the third-placed team in the 2. Bundesliga.
The top 4 teams in the Bundesliga qualify for the next season’s Champions League league phase, while the 5th-placed side qualifies for the Europa League. 6th-placed sides get to enter the next season’s Conference League play-off round.

Bayer Leverkusen - Leverkusen may have lost their league-winning head coach to Real Madrid, but they’ve recently appointed Arik ten Hag and have made several key signings, including Malik Tillman from PSV and Jarell Quansah from Liverpool. However, losing Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz will put a big dent in their title chances.
Borussia Dortmund - Dortmund haven’t won the league since the 2011-12 season, but they’ve been runners-up 7 times since then. Niko Kovac remains in charge as manager, while they’ve brought in some new recruits, including Jobe Bellingham. Dortmund fans will hope that he can follow in the footsteps of his older brother Jude, who excelled in the Bundesliga and won the 2023-24 La Liga Player of the Season award at Real Madrid.
