History of the ATP Finals Tournament
The ATP Finals has served as the closer to the men’s premier tennis tour, technically, since before the ATP was even formed. In fact, the championship was first held in 1970, a full two years before the body’s inception.
At that point, it was known as the Masters Grand Prix, and it wasn’t until 1990 that the competition came under the control of the ATP, when it would become the ATP Tour World Championships. This was also at a time when the Grand Slams were overseen by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
Because of that, the Championships were a parallel tournament to the Slams, with the winners of them earning the same number of points towards what are now known as the ATP rankings as if they had won one of the Slams. The ITF also introduced a rival competition, the Grand Slam Cup, which ran from 1990 to 1999.
In 1999, the two bodies decided to merge the competitions into the Tennis Masters Cup, and it would remain that way until it was rebranded as the ATP World Tour Finals in 2009 and, subsequently, the ATP Finals in 2017. It is now the most prestigious indoor hard court tournament in tennis.
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer top the list of all-time ATP Finals winners with seven and six wins, respectively, proving that they will go down in history as two of the very best to play the game.
Who won the 2024 ATP Finals?
Jannik Sinner, the holder of both the Wimbledon and Australian Open titles for 2025, won the singles event in 2024. He comfortably dispatched Taylor Fritz in the final and was the top seed above players like Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz.
The Italian superstar would not drop a single set in the tournament, ending with an impeccable 100% set win ratio and a mightily impressive 62% game win ratio. Only Zeverev came close with another 100% seat ratio and a 58% game ratio.
Who is Playing in the ATP Finals 2025?
At the time of writing (July 25), only one player has qualification in the bag, and that’s young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. His French Open win at Roland Garros, partnered with his loss in the 2025 Wimbledon final and wins at tournaments like the Italian Open, have given him an unassailable number of points.
The rest of the places are still up for grabs, and will be subject to change, so we’ve highlighted the current top eight and their current points standing:
Carlos Alacaraz - 7,540
Jannik Sinner - 6,000
Novak Djokovic - 3,380
Alexander Zverev - 3,290
Jack Darper - 2,940
Lorenzo Musetti - 2,620
Taylor Fritz - 2,575
Ben Shelton - 2,320
When is the ATP Finals 2025?
The 2025 ATP Finals will get underway at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy, on November 9 and will run for exactly a week, ending with the finals on November 16.
Format and Schedule of the ATP Finals
All roads lead not to Rome but to Turin, as far as the best ATP tennis stars are concerned. The ATP Finals event begins with a round-robin format, as eight players divide into two groups of four.
Each player plays three matches in their group, and the top two players proceed to the semi-finals. The winners of each semi-final then contest the grand final to become the end-of-season ATP Champion.
The order of play is yet to be decided, with almost all of the qualification places still up in the air. Once qualification is completed and the roster is full, dates and groups will begin to be announced.
How to Bet on the ATP Finals & Tennis Bet Types
Once you’ve decided on the tennis event that you would like to bet on, you need to consider which of the following bet types to place:
Moneyline (Head-to-Head): A moneyline bet in tennis is a straight-up head-to-head bet on a tennis match where you pick the winning player.
Outright (Tennis Futures): In an outright tennis bet, you typically pick the winner of an entire tournament, such as Wimbledon or the French Open. Read our outright sports betting guide for more information.
Correct score: A correct score bet in tennis is a bet on the final score in a set or entire match.
Handicap: Handicap betting is popular in tennis, as it allows you to back the favourite with a handicap attached, offering better odds should they win.
Over/Under (Game Totals): Rather than picking a winner, you can place an over/under totals tennis bet on the total number of games played in a match.
Double Result: A double result bet allows you to bet on two possible outcomes at the same tennis event.
X Set Winner: You can also bet on which player you think will win the first, second, and third sets in a tennis match.
X Set Total Games: This is a wager on the total number of games that you think will be played in a specific set.
1st Set Correct Score: A bet on what you think the score will be at the end of the first set.
Exact Sets: A wager on the exact number of sets that you think will be played in a tennis match. This is a form of set betting, which is incredibly popular in tennis betting.
