What is Rainbow Six Siege?
Rainbow Six (R6) is a tactical first-person shooter series that’s based on Tom Clancy novels and features a fictional international counterterrorist organisation code-named Rainbow. In 2015, publisher Ubisoft released Rainbow Six Siege, a multiplayer-only game that pits opposing teams of attackers and defenders against one another on different maps across various game modes. History of Competitive Rainbow Six Siege Esports
Rainbow Six Siege was designed with Esports in mind, with Ubisoft taking advice from ESL during the development process. The Rainbow 6 Pro League was launched in 2016, a year after the game’s initial release, and was held at the Intel Extreme Masters tournament.
In 2017, Ubisoft launched the Six Invitational, which has remained the most prestigious event on the competitive Rainbow Six calendar.
Ubisoft continued to partner with ESL to hold the Pro League annually until 2020, when the competitive R6 scene shifted to a regional, point-based format similar to Dota 2 and League of Legends.
To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the game, Ubisoft implemented the Siege X update in 2025, featuring major improvements to graphics and audio while also making the game free to play.
