Ryder Cup 2025 - Golf Betting Odds & Tips

This month, the best golfers from the US and Europe face off for the Ryder Cup, one of the most exciting events on the professional golf calendar. You can bet on golf at Stake Sportsbook, with odds available throughout the Ryder Cup.

What is the Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf tournament held between teams from Europe and the United States. It’s organised between the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe, which is made up of the PGA European Tour and the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland.

Two teams of 12 players on each side compete in a variety of pairs and singles matches across the 3 days of the competition. By winning matches, teams earn points, and the winning team is the one with the most points at the end of the final day.

History of the Ryder Cup

The first official Ryder Cup took place in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts, US. Before that, interest in an international match between American and great British professionals began in the early 1920s, with American golfers invited to take part in the 1921 Open Championship.

In 1926, English businessman and golf fan Samuel Ryder proposed an annual competition between British and American professionals to be held before the Open Championship. Ryder had previously sponsored a number of other sporting events, though due to uncertainty, the trophy wasn’t presented for the 1926 competition, which was held at Wentworth, UK.

In 1927, the competition was organised formally, with a full set of rules and a fund to help golfers travel to the US. However, it became clear that an annual tournament wasn’t practical, so it was instead changed to be held biennially.

The home side won the first 5 editions of the Ryder Cup, but from 1935, the American team dominated the competition, winning 12 out of 13 tournaments until 1969, which was tied. This led to the Great Britain and Ireland team being expanded to include players from continental Europe, which began in 1979.

In total, the USA has won 27 Ryder Cups, while Europe, including the UK, has won 15.

Format & Schedule of the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup features 4 different match play formats:

  • Foursomes - Also known as alternate shot, 2 players compete as partners against their opponents, hitting alternate shots and playing one ball between them.

  • Fourball - All 4 players in this match play individual balls, and the best score on each hole will win the hole for their team.

  • Singles - This is a standard match between 2 players, where one player from each team competes against another.

Each match is worth one point, and there are 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches on Friday and Saturday. Sunday features 12 singles matches, featuring every player from the US and Europe teams. A tied match results in a half point for each team.

When is the Ryder Cup?

The 2025 Ryder Cup takes place from 26 September to 28 September. This year, it will be held at the Black Course of Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York, United States.
