What is Counter-Strike 2?
Counter-Strike is a tactical first-person shooter game that pits a team of terrorists against a group of counter-terrorists who battle for control of different maps. In competitive Counter-Strike, the terrorists win the round by planting a bomb at one of the 2 bomb sites. Meanwhile, the counter-terrorists must try to stop them. Either side wins the round by eliminating all the opposing team, while the counter-terrorists win by defusing the bomb or preventing its detonation within the time limit.
Teams can earn resources over the course of the game, which are used to purchase game items such as weapons, armour and equipment.
Counter-Strike was originally created as a mod for Half-Life, and developer Valve hired the team behind the mod to launch a full version of the game in 2000. Although the series has always pitted Counter-Terrorists against Terrorists in a variety of objective-based game modes, the game has changed a lot with new releases. Version 1.6 came out in 2003, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was released in 2012, while the latest game in the series, Counter-Strike 2 launched in 2023.
Competitive tournaments for Counter-Strike have been held since 2000, but the first international tournament was held in 2001 at the Cyberathlete Professional League Winter Championship. This first tournament offered a $150,000 prize pool, but since then, the events and the prizes on offer have gotten bigger.
The launch of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, also known as CS: GO, helped elevate the series to one of the most popular games in Esports. Valve launched its CS: GO Major Championship in 2013, while the ESL Pro League was formed in 2015.
