What is Copa Libertadores?
The Copa Libertadores is an annual soccer tournament featuring the top club teams from across South America. It’s the highest level of competition in South American club football and is organised by CONMEBOL. It’s equivalent to the UEFA Champions League, while the Copa Sudamericana is equivalent to the Europa League, although the format is different for each.
47 teams from 10 associations take part in the tournament, with winners able to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the Recopa Sudamericana.
Copa Libertadores History & Past Winners
The first proper continental tournament in South America was the South American Championship of Champions, which was held in 1948 and won by Vasco de Gama of the Brazilian Serie A. It helped inspire the first European Cup, which would later become the Champions League. However, it had just one edition, and it wasn’t until later that a regular continental competition would be created in South America.
In 1958, the Copa de Campeones de América was introduced as a South American equivalent to the European Cup. The very first edition of the tournament was held in 1960 and featured 7 teams. Since then, it has expanded significantly and in 1965, it was named Copa Libertadores after the heroes of South American liberation.

2025 Copa Libertadores Schedule & Format
The 2025 Copa Libertadores features 8 stages, the first of which began in January. The top 4 teams from the first 3 stages qualify for the group stage, along with 28 teams that automatically qualified. During the group stage, there are 8 groups of 4 teams, and every team plays each opponent twice. The group winners and runners-up then enter the knockout rounds, which lead to the final in November 2025.
