What is the Ryder Cup Tournament?
The Ryder Cup is a men’s golf tournament held every two years. While most golf tournaments feature individual golfers competing against one another for the championship, the Ryder Cup is contested by two teams: The US and Europe. It began in 1927 as a competition between American and British golfers, but the British team was expanded to include players from continental Europe from 1979.
Format & Structure
The 2025 Ryder Cup is a match-play competition which is where golfers compete to win individual holes rather than aiming for the lowest 18-hold score. In addition, four different formats are used over the 3-day tournament, which is scheduled as follows:
September 26
The first day of the Ryder Cup features one four-match session of foursomes followed by one four-match session of four-ball.
In foursome matches, two-man teams play one ball per hole, with the players taking turns for each shot. Players alternate hitting tee shots, and the team with the lowest score on each hole will win that hole and earn a point. If scores are level, both teams earn a half point.
September 27
The second day of the Ryder Cup follows the same schedule as the first, with one four-match session of foursomes followed by one four-match session of four-ball.
Four-ball matches feature two-man teams, with each member of the team playing their own ball, meaning 4 balls are in play on every hole. Each team counts the lowest of its 2 scores of each hole, and the team with the lowest scoring player wins the hole and earns a point. If the low scores are tied between both teams, both teams earn a half point.
September 28 - Singles Matches
The final of the competition features 12 singles matches between one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole, and their team wins a point. If scores are tied, each team wins half a point.
Course
All matches are played on Bethpage Black, on Long Island, New York, United States. It’s known as one of the most challenging golf courses in the world, with US Open winning scores of 3-under par and 4-under par in 2002 and 2009. The difficulty comes from the fact that it’s so long, while the rough is deep and unforgiving, punishing any mistakes. What’s more, there are several large bunkers, and the greens are elevated, which means precision is required when making uphill approach shots.

Rory McIlroy - As the number 2-ranked player in the world, McIlroy is the standout star of the European team. This year, he won the Masters to bring his total major championship wins to 5. McIlroy made his Ryder Cup debut in 2010, helping Europe retain the cup by 14.5-13.5. He’s since appeared in 6 Ryder Cups, winning 4 of them. At the 2023 Ryder Cup, he was the top point scorer with a 4-1-0 record.
John Rahm - Rahm made his Ryder Cup debut in 2018, beating Tiger Woods in the singles match and helping Europe achieve victory. In 2021, Rahm won his first major championship at the US Open. In 2023, he won the Masters and later joined LIV Golf. Rahm went 3-1-1 in the 2021 Ryder Cup, losing to Scheffler in the singles match, but went 2-02 in 2023, this time tying his singles match against Scheffler.
Tommy Fleetwood - Fleetwood is ranked 6th in the world rankings and is one of the top golfers on Team Europe. In 2025, he secured the 2025 FedEx Cup and the Tour Championship and will be appearing at his 4th Ryder Cup. In 2018, he won all of his pairing matches, but he went 0-1-2 at the 2021 Ryder Cup. At the 2023 Ryder Cup, Fleetwood scored the decisive point in his single match and went 3-1-0 overall.
Bryson DeChambeau - DeChambeau won the US Open in 20220 and 2024 and has previously played at the 2018 and 2021 Ryder Cups. In 2018, he went 0-3-0 as Team USA lost, while he went 2-0-1 in 2021 as the US won.
Xander Schauffele - Schauffele won the PGA Championship and the Open Championship in 2024 and is currently ranked 3rd in the world. He made his Ryder Cup debut in 2021, winning both four-ball and foursome matches before losing his singles match. In 2023, he went 1-3-0.
