What is the ICC Champions Trophy?

The ICC Champions Trophy is a 50-over competition featuring the best national teams in the sport. Dragged out of the wilderness after last being staged in 2017, Pakistan is the host nation for 2025, with matches involving Team India played in Dubai.

History of ICC Champions Trophy

Originally known as the ICC Knockout when it was first staged in 1998, the competition was renamed the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002. The first tournament was rain-disrupted and ended in a no result. When the competition was revamped, it was staged every two years. Afterwards, the event switched to a four-year cycle involving the top eight teams.

The group stage of the ICC Champions Trophy commenced on 19 February as New Zealand defeated the defending champions, Pakistan, by 60 runs.

In the second match, India beat Bangladesh by 6 wickets, helped by a century from Shubman Gill, while South Africa beat Afghanistan by 107 runs in the third game.

The fourth match of the tournament saw two of the biggest rivals in cricket, Australia and England, go head to head. England scored an impressive 351/8 but Australia made the highest successful run chase in ICC history to win by 5 wickets.

In the fifth match of the tournament, fans got to witness another huge rivalry as India took on Pakistan. Another century, this time from Virat Kohli, helped India beat their rivals by 6 wickets.

New Zealand recorded a win over Bangladesh in the sixth game, meaning New Zealand and India qualified to the semi-finals while Bangladesh and Pakistan were eliminated. The seventh match, between Australia and South Africa, was abandoned.

Afghanistan put on an impressive display against England in the eighth match, scoring 325/7 in 50 overs. England fell just short, despite a century by Root, meaning they were knocked out of the tournament.

The tenth match saw points shared between Australia and Afghanistan, meaning Australia qualified for the semi-finals. In the eleventh match, South Africa beat England by 7 wickets, becoming the final team to qualify for the knockout round.

Who Will Win the ICC Champions Trophy?

India are currently the favourites to win the ICC Champions Trophy. They’ve been the best team of the tournament so far, topping Group A with 3 wins out of 3 and a net run rate of 0.715. While India are the favourites to win, they’ll have to get past a very strong Australia side to get to the final.

Australia may have only won one game in the group stages, but that’s only because bad weather meant they couldn’t finish the other two. They put on a record-breaking performance against England although they conceded a lot of runs against them and Afghanistan.

South Africa and New Zealand are outsiders to win the tournament, and neither has won the competition since it was renamed as the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002.
