Format & Schedule of Peru Primera Division
The Peruvian Primera Division runs from late January or early February until early November. The season is divided into competitions: the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura. Both the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura follow a single round-robin format. The winner of each qualifies for the playoffs. There is also an aggregate table that combines the standings of the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura and the top two teams in the aggregate table also qualify for the playoffs. The aggregate table also determines what teams qualify for international competitions like the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana and what teams are relegated to the Segunda Division.
However, if the winners of the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura are the top two teams in the aggregate table, both teams advance straight to the finals. If one team wins both the Torneo Apertura and the Torneo Clausura, they are declared the champion and there is no playoff. If there are playoffs, both the semifinals and finals are a two-legged, home-and-away aggregate playoff.
Since there is promotion and relegation in the Peruvian football pyramid, the participating teams change every year. Also, two teams were reinstated to the Primera Division after winning judicial cases, giving the league 19 teams for the 2025 season.
