What is Ligue 2?
Ligue 2 is the second division of French football, directly under Ligue 1. Each season sees teams from across France compete for a chance to be promoted to the highest level of soccer within the country. Promotion is the aim of any Ligue 2 club, but many clubs also have to battle to avoid relegation to the league below.

History of the Ligue 2
Ligue 2 was created in 1933, one year after France’s first fully professional soccer league was formed. The first season featured 26 clubs, split between North and South divisions, and in those days, it was known as Division 2. At the end of the season, the winners of each division played each other to determine who would be promoted to the first division. Red Star FC was the first champion of Ligue 2.
After several clubs folded, merged or lost their professional status, the French Football Federation turned the second division into a single table 16-club league for the 1934-25 season. However, it was increased to 25 clubs split over four groups just two years later.
During World War II, professional football was suspended, but after the war ended, Ligue 2 regained some stability. Over the years, the number of amateur clubs across France increased, and the French Football Federation allowed these clubs to join the league system and become professional if they met specific criteria.
In 2002, the Division was rebranded as Ligue 2, though it kept the same format and promotion and relegation system.
Le Havre have won the most Ligue 2 titles in their history, with a total of 6 league wins. Nancy are not far behind, with 5, while Metz, Lens, Nice and Lille all have 4.
Format & Schedule of the 2025-26 Ligue 2
Ligue 2 is a round-robin football league where each team plays the other teams twice. Teams play 34 games over the season, half at home and half away, and earn three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss.
Over the course of the season, points dictate each team’s position on the table. If points are tied, goal difference and goals scored are used.
At the end of the season, the top team is crowned the champions, earning automatic promotion along with the second-place team. The 3rd to 5th-placed teams all earn a spot in the promotion playoffs.
The bottom two teams are relegated automatically, while the 16th-placed team enters a relegation playoff with the 3rd-placed team of Championnat National.

Nancy, Le Mans and Boulogne join Ligue 2 after being promoted from National, while Montpellier, Saint-Étienne and Reims join after being relegated from Ligue 1.
On the other hand, Lorient, Paris FC and Metz were all promoted to Ligue 1, while Caen, Ajaccio and Martigues were relegated to the lower leagues.
