What is the Chilean Primera Division?
The Chilean Primera Division is Chile’s premier professional football league, featuring 16 clubs from across the country which compete against each other every season. The winners of the competition lift the Huemul de Plata trophy.
The top 2 sides also qualify for the Copa Libertadores group stage next season, while the 3rd placed side qualifies for the second stage of the Copa Libertadores the following season. Places 4-7 at the end of the season qualify for the first stage of the Copa Sudamericana next season.
History of the Chilean Primera Division
The Federacion de Futbol de Chile was one of the first national football associations in South America. Formed in 1895 as the Football Association of Chile, it held competitions between amateur college football clubs in Valparaiso, which had a large European community.
However, it took several decades before the first professional football league was formed. In 1933, eight clubs formed the Liga Professional de Football de Santiago, which was recognised by the Football Federation of Chile as an official league.
The original clubs of the first professional league were Union Espanola, Badminton, Colo-Colo, Audax Italiano, Green Cross, Morning Star, Magallanes and Santiago National FC. Magallanes won the first title after defeating Colo-Colo in an important match.
In the history of the competition, there have been 16 winners. Colo-Colo holds the record for the most titles, with 34, while Universidad de Chile has 18 and Universidad Catolica has 16.
Format & Schedule of Chilean Primera Division
Although the number of teams taking part has changed over the years, the 2025 Primera Division is contested between 16 teams. Each team plays every opponent twice, once at home and once away. Points are earned for winning or drawing, and the table rankings determine the winner. The bottom two teams get relegated to the Primera B de Chile and are replaced by the champions and playoff winners of the lower division for next season.
