What is Rocket League?
Rocket League is a vehicular soccer video game using rocket-powered cars. The arcade-style driving game is an exciting mix of car racing and soccer. Players take control of a rocket-powered car, which they use to hit a giant ball into the opponent’s goal and score points. Cars are capable of acrobatic jumps and flips, which allow players to dribble the ball, pass, shoot and block shots. In addition, boost power-ups are positioned around the
1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 game modes are available, along with game modes based on hockey, basketball and rugby. In competitive Esports, the standard game mode is used in either 3v3 or 1v1 formats. Matches are typically 5 minutes long, and the team with the most goals scored wins. Sudden death overtime is played if the scores are level.
History of Competitive Rocket League Esports
Since California-based Psyonix released the game in 2015, its high-octane sporting action has hooked gamers on platforms including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC. New features, maps and game modes have been added over the years to keep the audience engaged, whether home gamers or professional players on the Esports circuit.
Soon after the initial release of the game, it became a sponsored Esport event, with Electronic Sports League and Major League Gaming both announcing Rocket League tournaments. In 2016, Psyonix launched the first Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS), offering a $55,000 prize pool. The 2017 Summer X Games featured a Rocket League tournament, with the finals streamed on ESPN3. In the same year, Psyonix teamed up with the collegiate Esports organiser Tespa to launch a collegiate tournament that offered $50,000 in scholarships. 2017 was a big year for professional Rocket League, as Psyonix also founded the Rocket League Rival Series, which was the main league system up until 2020.
From 2020, the Rocket League Championship Series was updated to feature 3 separate regional splits, each with its own international majors. This was updated in 2024 to 2 regional splits and introduced the FIFAe World Cup, organised by FIFA and featuring a national team-focused Rocket League tournament. Since 2020, teams will qualify for the World Championship by competing in tournaments throughout the season.

The main types of bets are:
Match winner - Twoway – This is a moneyline bet that lets you predict which of the two teams or players you think will win the match.
Handicap bets – The handicap betting market even things up in a betting sense. For example, you can bet on the favourite -1.5, which means they need to win the match by 2 maps or more.
Total Maps – Stake.com sets a line on the expected total number of maps played over the course of a match. Simply bet on over or under the line. You can also bet on the total goals over/under in a match and whether the total number of maps will be an odd or even number.
Correct score – As simple as it sounds, get your score prediction right to win.
First goalscorer – Which player will drive to the ball and knock it into the goal first?
Both teams to score - This lets you bet on whether or not both teams will score during the match.
Outright winner – Also known as a futures bet. Select the team you think will be the overall winner of a tournament. You will likely get better odds on your favourite teams the earlier you place your bet before matches begin.
Specials – Consider these prop bets, like which player will get top scorer or whether or not a team will win at least one map.
Rocket League Betting Tips & Strategies
Simply guessing the outcome of upcoming Esports tournaments based on the odds is not the best betting strategy for success. Instead, take note of our elite sports betting tips, as well as the following techniques to increase your betting potential:
Learn the game’s rules – You’ll be at a major disadvantage if you don’t know how Rocket League is played. Get to know how teams play, how to score, and the times allowed for each period and game. You can watch Rocket League live streams or play the game for free to get a feel for how it works.
Understand tournament formats – All Rocket League tournaments and leagues follow different formats, with Esports leagues, or knockout stages or a bit of both. Some also have longer matches. With this in mind, keep up to date, so you are not placing bets that make little sense. Most professional Rocket League tournaments use a best-of-7 format to decide match winners.
Keep up with the news and stats – By regularly following the action and reading up on the game, you’ll spot betting opportunities. Perhaps a team’s key player is out for an upcoming match, something that should affect the odds, but you spot they haven’t shifted. Getting a grip on the stats might also throw up anomalies, like a lower-ranked team regularly getting good results against a particular opponent.
