What is SA20?
SA20 is South Africa’s premier Twenty20 (T20) cricket league. Cricket South Africa organises the tournament and features six teams from cities across the country.
As a T20 tournament, matches are contested between two teams, each having a single innings with a maximum of twenty overs. This means that games last around three and a half hours, leading to fast-paced and exciting cricket. The T20 World Cup is a popular T20 international cricket tournament.
The SA20 tournament features a league stage before the top teams progress to the knockout rounds. Teams acquire players through an auction rather than a draft, with up to five key players signed to each team before the auction.
History of SA20 Format & Schedule of SA2025
South Africa’s first T20 league, the T20 Global League, was established in 2017, although it was replaced in 2018 by the Mzansi Super League. However, it only ran for two seasons, as the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, Cricket South Africa created the SA20, with shares in the tournament split between the governing body, the broadcaster and Sundar Raman. The first edition of the tournament took place in 2023.
So far, Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won both tournaments, with the Pretoria Capitals and Durban’s Super Giants ending as runners-up.
Format and Schedule
SA20 2025 began on 9 January, and the final will be held on 8 February. There are 34 matches in total, and the competition begins with a double round-robin league before the top four teams progress to the play-offs.
During the league, teams receive 4 points for a win and 2 points for no result. After each team has played each opponent home and away, the top 2 sides advance to the Qualifier 1 stage of the play-offs while the 3rd and 4th placed sides progress to the Eliminator.
The winner of the Qualifier 1 stage automatically reaches the final, while the losing team will then play the winner of the Eliminator match in the Qualifier 2 stage for a chance to join them.
