Previous Fights & Fighter History
Justin Gaethje vs. Paddy Pimblett
This interim title clash sees former interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje face the up-and-coming Paddy Pimblett. Gaethje has been one of the top fighters in the UFC’s lightweight division since he arrived in 2017. He’s built a reputation as one of the most exciting fighters on the roster and has fully earned the nickname “The Highlight”. Although he lost to the undisputed champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, in 2020 and lost a lightweight championship fight to Charles Oliveira in 2022, Gaethje has remained in the top rankings of the weight class. However, the MMA odds have him as the underdog in this matchup.
Paddy Pimblett was a major star in Cage Warriors before coming to the UFC in 2021. The UK fighter is known for his brash personality and high-energy walkouts, as well as an exciting fighting style and excellent submission grappling skills. Since arriving in the UFC, he’s been unbeaten, winning 7/7 fights and finishing 5 of his opponents. His last fight saw him stop Michael Chandler in impressive fashion, after previously submitting King Green.
Based on their recent fights, Pimblett comes into this fight as the betting favorite. He has a high finish rate and has looked bigger and stronger than a lot of his opponents. However, it’s worth noting that many of his wins were against fighters like Tony Ferguson, who were in the twilight of their careers. Gaethje is probably not the fighter he once was, but he’s still beaten top opponents in recent years, including Dustin Poirier and Rafael Fiziev twice. As a result, we’re expecting a tough fight for Paddy, but if he can take Gaethje down, there’s a good chance he’ll submit him.
Kayla Harrison vs Amanda Nunes
2-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison has been one of the most dominant women’s MMA champions of all time, but she’ll now face Amanda Nunes, who is widely considered the women’s MMA GOAT. Harrison has won 3/3 fights in the UFC and was a 2-time PFL champion, with 15 wins and just 1 loss. She won the UFC women’s bantamweight belt in the summer with a submission over Julianna Peña. Understandably, she’s the favorite according to the latest UFC odds, as she’s facing an opponent who has been retired for more than 2 years.
Nunes retired in 2023, having won 14 UFC fights and lost just 2, while winning both the women’s bantamweight and featherweight belts and amassing a total of 8 title defenses. Although she won everything possible, she’s now returned for a legacy fight with the current dominant champion. Her long layoff means she’s an underdog for the first time since 2018.
Harrison most likely has the edge in this fight. Thanks to her judo background and impressive strength, she’s an incredible grappler and capable of beating anyone on the ground. Nunes is a great all-around fighter though, with good striking and submission skills. If Nunes has been training her takedown defense during her layoff, it will be a tough test for the current champion, but ring rust means Harrison has the advantage.
