What is Serie A?
The Serie A is the top division of professional soccer in Italy. It features 20 clubs from across Italy and is part of the wider soccer pyramid. The league uses a promotion and relegation system with the levels below, meaning any team in the country can reach the Serie A by performing well over multiple seasons and winning promotions. Teams taking part in Serie A also get to participate in the Coppa Italia, and top sides can qualify for European competitions such as the UEFA Champions League.
Serie A History & Past Winners
The Italian Football Championship was founded in 1898. However, disputes over the number of teams taking part led to a split between governing bodies in Italy, and multiple leagues existed for several years. From the 1923-24 season, the winners of the Italian league championship have been granted the honour of wearing the scudetto on their kits the following season.
In 1929, Serie A and Serie B were formed to reorganise Italian soccer into a national meritocracy with 2 main divisions. Although Serie A split from Serie B in 2009 due to an argument over television rights, promotion and relegation have remained in place between the 2 divisions.
There have been a total of 16 winning clubs in the history of the national Italian football championships. Juventus have won the most titles, at 36, while Inter Milan have 20 and AC Milan have 19. Napoli are the current defending champions, having won in 2024/25.
2025/26 Serie A Schedule & Format
Since 2004, Serie A has been contested between 20 clubs, playing in a round-robin format. Each team plays one home and one away game against every other team in the competition. Teams win 3 points for winning a game and 1 point for a draw. A loss awards zero points. These points are used to rank teams on the table, and the club with the most points at the end of the season wins Serie A.
The top 4 teams qualify for the league phase of next season’s Champions League, while the 5th-placed team qualifies for the next season of the UEFA Europa League. The 6th-placed team qualifies for the play-off round of next season’s Conference League.

Who Will Win Serie A?
Napoli - Napoli secured the title by 1 point last season, despite selling one of their key players, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, in the January transfer window. Under the management of Antonio Conte, they’re a force to be reckoned with, and the signings of Premier League legend Kevin De Bruyne, Sam Beukema and Noa Lang will bolster their squad.
Inter Milan - Inter suffered a terrible defeat in last season’s Champions League final after narrowly losing out on their 21st Serie A title. In addition, head coach Simone Inzaghi left during the summer, hurting their title chances this season. However, they’ve made a few shrewd signings, including Luis Henrique and Peta Sučić, who could make a difference.
Juventus - Juventus may have been a dominant force in Serie A, but they haven’t won a title in 5 seasons now. They’re 3rd favourites to be crowned champions this season, though they’ve already brought in 6 new players, including talented winger Francisco Conceição from Porto. In addition, they have a new coach, Igor Tudor, who was appointed in March.
AC Milan - Milan won their first Serie A title in over 10 years in the 2021-22 season, but remain one of the top challengers. They’re currently 4th favorite in the betting odds and have made some interesting signings, including the free transfer of Luka Modrić from Real Madrid. They’re also appointed former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.
