Argentina’s Hopes for the 2026 World Cup
Argentina topped the CONMEBOL World Cup qualification table and will head into the 2026 World Cup as one of the favourites. You can read more on our World Cup predictions and learn Agüero’s thoughts on the upcoming tournament below.
After winning the 2022 World Cup, are Argentina still hungry for success?
That’s in the DNA of the Argentine player. He always wants to win. More and more. The hunger for glory is never lost, even more so when playing for the national team shirt.
Lionel Messi was, of course, a major factor in Argentina’s success at the 2022 World Cup, scoring 7 goals, including 2 in the final. He recently renewed his contract with Inter Miami and looks set to play in a record 6th World Cup. How long can he play at the highest level?
We all want Leo to play forever. Even though we all know that’s impossible. We have to enjoy him while he keeps playing, and he will know until when and where.
With qualification for the 2026 World Cup already secured, how are Argentina preparing for the upcoming World Cup?
I see them very well. They maintain their playing style, the coaching staff is clear on what they want, and there have been very important additions that will help keep the team at a high level. It’s true they’ll lack match time because there will be few preparation games, although that will happen to almost all national teams. But Argentina has a solid system and whoever comes in adapts very well.
Can Argentina win a 4th World Cup?
Why not? They keep their core, their playing style, and their hunger for glory. And Scaloni has found great players who are completing the squad after others ended their cycle. A World Cup is always difficult, but I think Argentina are always contenders, because of history and because of the present.
Argentine Soccer
Agüero started his professional career at Independiente, which has recovered from serious financial issues in recent years. We asked him about the club’s current situation:
With Quinteros the team managed to recover the level it had shown in the first part of the year. The team regained confidence, and key players raised their level. We’ll have to see whether they can keep the squad and strengthen it. But these last two months, the team improved a lot and achieved several wins in a row.
You established the Copa Potrero to highlight the passion and creativity found in the “potreros” of neighborhoods across Argentina. What can you tell us about the second edition of this tournament?
We’re in full competition and this second edition is being played with the same intensity as the first one. I’m very happy to organize this Cup and that the boys who haven’t had the luck to play professionally can experience a tournament as close as possible to what a first–division player lives. I see them arriving at the facilities happy, with top-level locker rooms, catering, massages, their families watching on TV or stream… and all with great organization, with 300 people involved daily. It’s true there are very important prizes $350,000 distributed and the champion gets $210,000, but what prevails is the passion for football, that street football so characteristic of Argentina. This Cup is a tribute to the neighbourhood football many of us came from.
This year, your former international teammate Di Maria returned to his boyhood club Rosario Central. So far, he’s scored 7 goals in 15 appearances. What do you make of his return?
I am happy for him. It’s what he wanted, and he was able to make it happen. And he’s scoring important goals and being vital for his team.
La Liga Drama and Predictions
Between 2006 and 2011, Agüero played 175 times for Atlético Madrid, scoring 74 goals for the La Liga side. After leaving Manchester City, he also had a brief stint at Barcelona before retiring. Check out our La Liga picks and predictions for this season. We asked Aguüero some questions about the current stories within La Liga.
Your former teammate Lionel Messi is the all-time top scorer in La Liga and recently visited Barcelona and expressed how much he missed the city and the club. What are your thoughts on this?
Messi is the most important player Barcelona has had in its history. He’s a club and city legend. Messi is synonymous with Barcelona and I believe he enjoyed stepping on the Camp Nou pitch again. I think that chapter is not closed.
Recently, Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, has come under criticism for setting the team up with such a high defensive line. Should Flick change the high line?
I don’t think so. He might make some adjustments, considering everyone already knows his style and how his team plays. He’s had very good results with a very attractive style, just as Barça’s history demands.
Real Madrid brought in Xabi Alonso to manage the team this season, and there seems to be friction between him and some of the club’s biggest stars. What do you make of the Real Madrid dressing room rumours?
I never give importance to rumours. Xabi Alonso’s process started very recently and his beginning has been very encouraging with very good results. The same happens with Barça: whatever they do generates media noise. Beyond that, I think he should just be allowed to work, and from what we’ve seen he’s not doing badly at all.
Premier League 2025/26 Insights and Predictions
Sergio Agüero is one of the all-time top scorers in the Premier League, having recorded 184 goals in 275 appearances for Manchester City, including that famous title-winning goal against QPR in 2012. Manchester City recently recorded a dominant 3-0 win against title rivals Liverpool. Was it unexpected?
The result didn’t surprise me. City keeps growing more and more, very solid in defence, with a lot of play in midfield and very efficient in attack. At this level they can get very good results and be in the fight.
Salah was a key player for Liverpool last season, winning the Premier League’s best player award and Golden Boot as they won the title. So far this season, he has just 4 goals from 12 games. What do you think about his current form?
Never doubt great goal scorers. Salah has a great scoring average and I’m sure he’ll get back to his rhythm. I think he was affected by his team not having the best start. And a player can’t do everything alone.
Arsenal have started the season strongly and are top of the table. However, they drew against Sunderland while conceding 2 goals. What are your thoughts on the result?
In ten matches Arsenal had only conceded three goals. That speaks to their defensive consistency. Sunderland have had a great start to the season and scoring twice against Arsenal in that context speaks very well of them.
Kompany’s Success in the Bundesliga
Former City teammate Vincent Kompany is currently in charge of Bayern Munich as they hunt for their record 34th Bundesliga title. We asked Agüero what he thought about his former teammate’s success:
I’m happy about his present at Bayern. His team knows what it wants and is having very good results. We know his ability and Bayern’s success doesn’t surprise me.
Could Vincent Kompany end up managing Manchester City one day, maybe after Pep Guardiola leaves the club?
I don’t know if it’s written. Vinny is one of City’s symbols, a legend, someone very important in the club’s decade of great achievements. It’s football, anything can happen in the future.
